Around-the-World Airline Tickets
by Judy Wolf

Thinking about planning your own around-the-world adventure? Around-the-world (ATW or RTW) airline tickets make a great backbone for your trip. Like many people, you may be walking around with the idea that ATW tickets are heavy on restrictions and complicated to arrange and understand. Not so anymore!

The airlines must have gotten sick of the red tape themselves, because today's ATW tickets are flexible, straightforward alternatives well worth considering. The two major airline alliances I ran across during my globe-trotting adventures were...

oneworld alliance
British Airways, American Airlines, Qantas, Lan Chile, Cathay Pacific and a host of other partners airlines team up to offer 570 destinations in 134 countries. Their oneworld Explorer ticket splits the world up into zones, with a certain number of stops and segments within each zone included in the basic ticket price (no mileage restrictions). You can add more stops and segments for a surcharge. Or you can choose to explore a single continent with their oneworld Visit Passes.

Star Alliance
Air Canada, United, Singapore Airlines, Lufthansa, Air New Zealand and a large network of partner airlines offer an around-the-world ticket at three fare levels, allowing you to travel up to 29,000, 34,000 or 39,000 flying miles with as few as three, or as many as 15 stopovers in different cities (within the permitted mileage).

Both alliances allow for travel ranging from 10 days to 12 months. While you're required to set your itinerary in terms of destinations (that's how they know how much to charge you), both alliances let you decide or change travel dates freely as you go. Which is great for taking advantage of those wonderful, unexpected opportunities!
