Local Author to Appear at Barnes & Noble
for Father's Day Book Reading

Rochester, NY, June 14, 2004 — Local author Judy Wolf appears at a book reading at the Monroe Avenue Barnes & Noble at 7 p.m. on Monday, June 14. Wolf’s essay “The Alchemy of Dread and Daring” is part of an anthology by Wendy Knight entitled Far From Home: Father Daughter Travel Adventures, which has been described as “an inspiring collection of essays exploring the relationship between fathers, daughters and the outdoors. Reading these tales will tug hard at your emotions and bring to life many of the greatest joys and fears of parenthood.”

Fathers have a profound impact on their daughters, shaping their abilities to love and ultimately to venture forth, physically and emotionally. At the same time, daughters both inadvertently and purposefully break down the artificial walls of masculinity that men sometimes build with a purity and power that mothers, wives, and girlfriends cannot. Weaving together the thrill of adventure with the unique issues surrounding that connection, Far From Home: Father-Daughter Adventures examines what happens when fathers and daughters embark on journeys together.

Veteran outdoor travel writer Mark Jenkins exposes his daughter to the mountains at an early age, but discovers that the lure of pop culture can eclipse his best efforts to teach her about the outdoors. Lauralynn Dixon gets caught up in her father's last escapade -- restoring a run-down farmhouse in Scotland -- and finally sees the man behind the "dad." R. Gay begins to understand where home is while on the banks of Massacre River in Haiti, her father's homeland. Dan Glick learns how to be both father and mother to his adolescent daughter on a round-the-world trip. These remarkable essays and the many others in this insightful, engrossing collection are sure to entice and inspire adventurous fathers, daughters, and armchair travelers alike.

Wolf (www.judywolf.com) is a freelance writer, speaker, mountaineer, and whitewater kayak instructor. She’s taken many extended solo journeys around the world, traveling by foot, bus, jeep, camel, truck, boat, train, plane, elephant, and bicycle to over 30 countries on five continents, and is currently working on a book about her most recent around-the-world adventures. Her essays are included in two additional upcoming anthologies: A Woman’s Europe and Runner’s High. Her work has appeared (or is due to appear) in journals such as Alpinist, Adirondack Explorer, Blueline, BootsnAll.com, Conservationist, Hope Magazine, Massage Magazine, The Rose & Thorn, Steel Point Quarterly, US Airways Caribbean Breeze, and the Utica Observer-Dispatch.
