Stepping Beyond the Comfort Zone -- A Semester Abroad in India | ||||
Jessie McComb remembers stepping off the plane, walking into the Madras airport, and thinking, "This place looks like nobody has been here since 1972." Twenty-two hours before, she had left her comfortable, middle-class home in Leominster, Massachusetts (the birthplace of Johnny Appleseed and plastic pink flamingo lawn ornaments), and stepped aboard a plane bound for India, where she was to spend a semester abroad at a university in Pondicherry. Yet DeMuth has discovered the secret truth about adventure... Read the article. |

Beyond Assumptions: One Woman's Experience of Living Abroad in the U.S.A. |
Atsuko Suda is one of those people you might overlook in a crowd. She dresses conservatively -- no outlandish fashion symbols draw your eye. She's friendly, polite, thoughtful. Unless you engage her in conversation, you might never realize that she's a thoroughly creative and spunky person who's spent almost a quarter of her young life living and traveling abroad. I had the good fortune to interview Atsuko over lunch, and discovered a treasure trove of thoughtful observations on life experiences -- many of them gleaned as a foreigner in my homeland.
