Stepping Beyond the Comfort Zone -- A Semester Abroad in India

Jessie McComb remembers stepping off the plane, walking into the Madras airport, and thinking, "This place looks like nobody has been here since 1972."

Twenty-two hours before, she had left her comfortable, middle-class home in Leominster, Massachusetts (the birthplace of Johnny Appleseed and plastic pink flamingo lawn ornaments), and stepped aboard a plane bound for India, where she was to spend a semester abroad at a university in Pondicherry. She had arranged the direct enrollment program herself, but despite her hours of meticulous planning and preparation, she never suspected that she was about to embark on the most challenging and introspective episode of her life...

Adventures Within: On the Path to Self Awareness

How many of us are brave enough to search inward for adventure? Jeanne R. is an unpretentious 50-year-old mother of two children, now young adults, and she's been married over 30 years to her high school sweetheart. "From my earliest memory, I wanted to be a mom. It may sound alien in this day of career women, but I took this job very seriously." In a world where stay-at-home moms often feel a need to justify their choices, Jeanne doesn't spend much time apologizing.

During these past few decades, Jeanne herself has been on an intrepid journey of "self-understanding," a voyage which has introduced her to many intriguing people and places...In this Adventurous Life highlight, Jeanne shares secrets and insights from her inspiring inward adventures... Sitting across from Professor Danielle DeMuth in her book-lined office, a computer screen bleeping that it holds messages for her when she has a moment, the last word one might think of is "adventurous." Yet DeMuth has discovered the secret truth about adventure... Read the article.

Beyond Assumptions: One Woman's Experience of Living Abroad in the U.S.A.

Atsuko Suda is one of those people you might overlook in a crowd. She dresses conservatively -- no outlandish fashion symbols draw your eye. She's friendly, polite, thoughtful. Unless you engage her in conversation, you might never realize that she's a thoroughly creative and spunky person who's spent almost a quarter of her young life living and traveling abroad.

I had the good fortune to interview Atsuko over lunch, and discovered a treasure trove of thoughtful observations on life experiences -- many of them gleaned as a foreigner in my homeland. Read the article.
