"How wonderful is it
that nobody need wait
a single moment
before starting to
improve their world."

- Anne Frank

Right in My Own Backyard

The best thing about starting this newsletter is the awakening it has created in my own life. It gave me an excuse to be curious - and suddenly, everyone around me is fascinating. I greet the man who delivers our mail and think, "What a great job - I wonder what he looks forward to seeing every day?" I stand in line at the local copy shop and am in awe of the old gentleman who has recorded his life stories and wants to know how much printing and binding will cost so he can share them with his family. Or the young woman who has started her own business and is having more brochures done. "There is adventure everywhere," I realize.

Inspiration doesn't have to be grandiose and barely attainable. It doesn't have to be famous or profoundly insightful or dramatic. It can be as simple as remembering what you really like to do. What captures your imagination - even for an instant? What engages your curiosity? What gives you a moment of feeling utterly connected to the world around you?

Today, give yourself permission to be curious. Take a moment for yourself and ask what's one fun thing you really want to do this week. Then set aside time to make it happen! Can't think of anything? Go for a walk along the same route every day for a week and notice the changes that occur around you. Was that flower there yesterday? Try one of the Top 5 Ideas to Inspire You This Month. Think of your own 10 Great Reasons to Get Up in the Morning (and send them to me!).

Top 5 Ideas to Inspire You This Month

  1. Plan a raft trip
  2. Plant a giant pumpkin
  3. Stop your car in the middle of your "normal" route. Get out and wander for 20 minutes - see what you find
  4. Cook an exotic meal with friends
  5. Talk to a stranger - learn what her life dream is

I never in my wildest dreams thought I would...

I recently told a reporter for the Syracuse Post-Standard (see a copy of the story on my web site) that I never in my wildest dreams thought I would jump out of an airplane. I used to be so afraid of heights, I couldn't walk across the low bridge on a children's jungle gym. In a systematic approach to exploring this fear, I've jumped from bungee platforms and out of airplanes and thrown myself off waterfalls in my kayak. Today, my fear of heights is greatly diminished, and I loved the views from suspension bridges in Nepal.

What have you accomplished or experienced that you never would have imagined for yourself? Send me your story!

10 Great Reasons to Get Up in the Morning

  1. Having lunch with a good friend
  2. Seeing what grew in the garden last night
  3. Working on my next exciting project
  4. Hugs!
  5. Visiting my favorite shopkeeper (that sly trouble-
    maker!)
  6. Phone date with my sister
  7. Playing with the dog
  8. Kayaking a new creek
  9. Going for a walk in the woods
  10. The sheer joy of relieving a full bladder

Travel Corner: Around-the-World Airline Tickets

Thinking about planning your own around-the-world adventure? Around-the-world (ATW) airline tickets make a great backbone for your trip. Like many people, you may be walking around with the idea that ATW tickets are heavy on restrictions and complicated to arrange and understand. Not so anymore!
